Camp Davis opened herein 1940 as a US Army anti-aircraft artillery training center, spanning more than 45,000 acres and over1,000 buildings, and it took the town from 28 residents in 1940 to roughly 110,000 people in 1943,including a large Women's Army Corps contingent. The camp closed in 1944. Marine Corps Outlying FieldCamp Davis still carries the name.
