Which Subaru Ascent Trims Seat 7 vs 8 Passengers?

Premium and Limited are built both ways: a second-row bench makes it an8-passenger Ascent, captain's chairs make it a 7. Limited Bronze Edition, Touring and Onyx EditionTouring are 7-passenger only.

The short answer. Two of the five Subaru Ascent trims can be had either way, andthree cannot. Premium and Limited are sold as separate 7-Passenger and 8-Passenger models. LimitedBronze Edition, Touring and Onyx Edition Touring come with second-row captain's chairs and Subarulists the bench as not available on all three, so they seat 7 and only 7.

What It Actually Changes

Bench or Captain's Chairs: How to Decide

The bench is the only way to seat three across

An 8-passenger Ascent puts a three-place bench in the second row. That matters in exactly onecommon situation and it is a big one: three child seats side by side. Captain's chairs physicallycannot do it, no matter how the seats are arranged.

The bench also brings reclining 60/40-split flat-folding seatbacks, which the captain's chairs donot have, so you can drop one side for long cargo and keep a passenger in the other.

The trade is access. To reach the third row past a bench, someone folds or slides a sectionforward first.

Captain's chairs buy you a walkway

A 7-passenger Ascent puts two individual chairs in the second row with a gap between them. Anyoneriding in the third row walks straight through without an adult getting out of the car in a parkinglot. If someone sits back there every day, on a school run or a team carpool, that is the differenceyou will notice within a week.

You give up the third second-row seat and the split-folding bench. For a household of five or six, that is usually a cost worth paying. For a household of seven, it is not.

Cargo changes with the trim, not the seat count

This is the part shoppers get backwards. The 43.5 versus 42.1 cubic foot difference behind thesecond row is not about the bench. It is the panoramic moonroof, which is standard from Limited upand takes height out of the cargo hold. A Premium 7-Passenger and a Premium 8-Passenger hold the same43.5 cubic feet.

Maximum cargo runs 75.6 cubic feet on Premium and 72.8 cubic feet on Limited and above, with bothrear rows folded. Every trim keeps the underfloor storage tray.

Buying One in Jacksonville

Which One Should You Look For in Onslow County?

Both configurations show up on our lot in Jacksonville, and which one is hereon a given week is not something we can promise from a web page. What we can do is tell you how thechoice usually goes locally.

Look at the 8-passenger if

You are running three child seats, you carpool for a team or a church group, or you regularly haveseven or eight people in the car. The bench is the only configuration that seats three across, andits split-folding seatbacks are the more flexible cargo answer for a long run out NC-24.

Look at the 7-passenger if

Your third row is in daily use by kids who load themselves, or you want the second row to feellike two separate seats rather than a shared bench on a longer drive up US-17. Every Ascent trimabove Limited comes this way, so the nicer equipment lives here.

Whichever way you lean, call ahead. Tell us which second row you want andwe will check what is actually on the ground rather than have you drive over on the chance. Inventorymoves weekly.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Subaru Ascent trims seat 8 passengers?

Premium and Limited, and only when ordered in their 8-Passenger configuration with the second-row bench seat. Subaru lists the bench as Not Available on Limited Bronze Edition, Touring and Onyx Edition Touring, so those three seat 7.

Which Subaru Ascent trims seat 7 passengers?

All five trims can seat 7. Limited Bronze Edition, Touring and Onyx Edition Touring come that way as the only option, with second-row captain's chairs standard. Premium and Limited seat 7 when you order the captain's chairs instead of the bench.

Is the second-row bench a cost option or a separate configuration?

It is a separate configuration. Subaru builds Premium and Limited as distinct 7-Passenger and 8-Passenger models rather than selling the bench as an add-on. That means availability on a dealer lot depends on which version was ordered, not on a box you tick at delivery.

Do captain's chairs make it easier to reach the third row?

Usually yes. The gap between two captain's chairs gives a walk-through path to the third row without moving anyone or anything. With the bench, you fold or slide a section forward instead. Both work, but the captain's chairs are quicker when someone is riding in the back every day.

Does the 8-passenger version hold more cargo?

Slightly, but that is a trim effect rather than a seating effect. Premium, in either configuration, holds 43.5 cubic feet behind the second row and 75.6 cubic feet with the rows folded. Limited and above hold 42.1 and 72.8 cubic feet, because the panoramic moonroof takes height out of the space.

Which second row is better for car seats?

The bench takes three across, which the captain's chairs cannot do at all. If you need three child seats in the second row, the 8-passenger configuration is the only one that works. If you have two and want a clear walkway to the third row, the captain's chairs are easier to live with. The LATCH system is standard either way.

Does the choice change the engine or the drivetrain?

No. Every 2026 Ascent, in every trim and both seating configurations, uses the same 2.4-liter turbocharged SUBARU BOXER four-cylinder rated at 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft, with a Lineartronic CVT and Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive standard.

Can I see both configurations at Sport Durst Subaru in Jacksonville?
